Kvlt Of Hiob - "Thy Kingly Mask"

Blut & Eisen (2012)

Damn, those vocals were annoying the first two spins. A mixture of Attila Csihar and Nameless Void (Negative Plane). No regular black metal shrieking, sir. And no regular black metal music. If you check out the track "Sacrament", there are some parts where the drums go full on while the guitars are almost doomy. With the vocals on top, this creates a very wicked atmosphere.

The music is built on riff followed by riff, yet a second guitar gives us melody after melody. Insanity for a male brain since we, some claim, manage to focus on one thing at the time. But patience, my fellow extreme metallers, and you will be rewarded.

Enter, and you will experience a varied album which is disturbing. Insane vocals, as said, chaotic music and a superb sound that dresses the music in a disconcerting way. Those short cuts, rituals or something, make this an even better release. I often find these ambient pieces annoying, since they tend to hassle with the atmosphere. But fear not, in Kvlt Of Hiob's nutcase they are welcomed breaks from insane music. And the music is quite original as well. I can't really think of a band that is akin to Kvlt Of Hiob, though there are of course hints of this and hints of that.

Let this album grow on you, allow yourself to become friend with the vocals and you will be having many horrifying hours with these Germans.

RE:Kvlt Of Hiob -
What's not typical for "evil" black metal is that "Hiob" is actually the proper Hebrew reading of "Job", the guy who Hebrew god of the old testament is tormenting via satan. So it appears "kvlt of Hiob" means cult of a righteous man betrayed and martyred by god. And that makes it just as black metal as Emperor, though still not "evil". Didn't actually listen to that yet as I'm trying to make Ne Obliviscaris reveal itself to me in its whole splendor, but it is next on my list.

If you cum up with a few questions for the band, you know my e-mail. I guess we have to dwell a bit with the name of the game...
