Eternity - "Pestiferous Hymns – Rev. I-I-XXXIII"

World Terror Committee (2012)

We are proud to welcome one of Germany’s long serving Black Metal Bands back into the ranks of the Terror Committee…”. Quoted from the label’s website. Long serving? Eternity? You do the math…

Listening to these, ahem, hymns is a fine exercise one day you don’t have much else to do. I mean, black metal like this is not original any single second. And 45 minutes of re-releasing material that has been done before, numerous times, is not what I’d call quality in life. By all means, the material is OK, the sound is OK and the vocals are OK. The music is mostly mid-paced and that’s also OK. And there you go. Eternity’s form of black metal is OK. And OK has never been enough, now has it?

If you’re one of those who have to check out everything in your favourite genre, I guess “Pestiferous Hymns…” is a safe bet. I mean, I have three spins in a row and the album is a grower. However, it will not grow from like 2 to 6, but rather from 2 to 3.5 or even 4. And when I compare this band with other acts I know in my black (metal) heart that more than 4 is not an option. The Marduk-slow melodies do the dirty deeds and Eternity manage to make their music drive forward. But as you’ve guess, this is not the Lamborghini version of extreme music, but more like a safe Toyota. Best moments are “Temple Of Flesh” and “Reborn through the Flame (Against the Creation)”, while the horrible “…Of Satan’s Blood” should’ve been thrown away at the demo stadium.
