Emptiness - "Error"

Dark Descent Records (2012)

“Error” is the third full-length for Belgian four-piece Emptiness.  Although it contains nine tracks, it actually feels more like one extended composition – a voyage through a soundscape carved of atmospheric post black/death metal. The tempo is generally slow to mid-paced, something like Neurosis with an injection of death and more gravel than angst in the vocals. Often when we meet this type of album the songs are the kind that build slowly and inexorably towards a cathartic release, but with “Error” the structures are simpler, relying on the underlying dark groove and overlaid guitar lines to keep the listener’s interest all the way through.

Overall, “Error” is highly effective stuff. It conjures up a feeling of horror and claustrophobia and takes the listener on a journey, rather than just pummeling them in four minute bursts. The musicianship is subordinate to the mood of the album, meaning the guitars subtly ornament and add nuance to each song in an understated way that really is more impressive than any amount of blistering solos when you think about it.

A strong release and a band to watch out for in future.
