Chaos Inception - "The Abrogation"

Lavadome Records (2012)

From the very first blasts of this album it is obvious that Morbid Angel’s “Covenant” has been a major influence on Chaos Inception, both in terms of sound and approach to song writing. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It is one of the Florida titan’s best albums and not many death metal acts can say Trey & Co. weren’t an influence.

This is brutal stuff, packed with incendiary solos, hammering beats and arpeggios that pile up on each other so quickly we almost imagine the riffs are climbing up each other’s arses in their haste to get out the gates. Although “The Abrogation” is only a tad over 30 minutes in length, there is enough rabid death metal to ensure it makes for an enjoyable ride.

The only problem is that there is so little variety between the songs that after a couple of tracks the whole thing starts to blend into a formless mass, meaning some loss impact as the attention starts to wander ever so slightly. Still, fans of US death metal should check this act out for an example of how 90’s style death metal can be made sound vital and modern. At time of writing you can pick “The Abrogation” up direct from the label at only 6 dollars. Check out the cover artwork too – an early contender for DM cover of the year?
