Century Media Records (2003)
An album that begins with notes from Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” is worth attention. Especially if the music aside the introduction is up to par. And Vital Remains give us their brightest moment, or darkest if you will, with “Dechristianize”.
Excellent musicianship, well crafted and varied songs and a sound that’s not too clear yet more than clear enough. One hour of death metal, never tedious, never just run on the mill despite the common death metal sections we’ve heard in many other bands. But take those solos for one; melodic, creating well balanced counterparts to the sheer brutality of the music.
The most significant aspect with “Dechristianize” is of course the vocal. Glen Benton delivers the highlight of his career. Brutal as hell, inspired and so fitting that it’s a wonder he went on to make more Deicide albums. Though, “The Stench Of Redemption” is definitely up there together with “Dechristianize”, while things went back to normal with the disappointing “Till Death Do Us Part”.
Vital Remains’ “Dechristianize” is a monster that should be placed up there together with such albums as “Deicide”, “Blessed Are The Sick”, “Left Hand Path” and those classics we know from the late 80’s/early 90’s.
