CHAOSWAVE – Dead Eye Dreaming

Silverwolf Productions (2009)

Based out of Italy, this outfit known as Chaoswave really grabbed my attention and caught me by surprise with this recording. “Dead Eye Dreaming” is a 12 track collection of innovative and very technical modern metal which combines an array of influences ranging from thrash, metalcore, goth and prog-rock. This is what makes Chaoswave different and standout amongst the pack. You just can’t classify and label them to any extent. If I had to draw any comparisons, the dynamic interplay and harmony exchanges between male and female vocalists reminded me of their fellow Italian counterparts Lacuna Coil, especially during the more melodic goth like atmospheric breaks in the songs which take place after a blast of swirling guitars and “machine gun” double bass drum antics.

Regarding the musicianship, the members of Chaoswave handle their instruments with sheer precision and the final outcome is that which can be referred to as “The Excellence Of Execution”. Tracks like the album opener “10 Years Of Denial” and “Rise” for example thrive thanks to an explosive orgy of complicated yet catchy chord progressions, sizzling guitar solos and a very tight and crisp rhythm section which gets the job done. A decent amount of the instrumental jams and six string noodling  may remind you of a progressive mixture of “Rust In Peace” era Megadeth crossbred with a band like Nevermore.

The vocals meanwhile add lots of emotional energy to this release. Featuring male vocalist Fabio and female singer Giorgia, both their voices combine for some awesome and truly inspiring harmonies, especially during chorus arrangements. Worth mentioning, vocalist Fabio has a very unique voice with an original tone which is loaded with lots of range capabilities. His angry yet sort of alternative operatic tone can be comparable a little to the voice of System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian. Speaking of System Of A Down, Chaoswave’s  more alternative metal influences seem to stem from this band. Despite the reference points and comparisons to other bands, Chaoswave are indeed very original in their own way and this album is definite proof of this fact. Worth checking out!
