Granat (2007)
It’s really great to witness the Norwegian metal scene steadily growing and spreading its tentacles gradually into more genres. It’s especially pleasurable to witness this when it brings about bands playing not only well but also creating innovative and fresh albums within established genres. 66Crusher from Bergen was formed in 2000 and has had its current line-up since 2003. Since the beginning the band has developed its sound into a fine blend of thrash and progressive metal. With great emphasis on melodies and obvious roots in heavy metal 66Crusher seems to shift between being a Thrash orientated band to being a melodic power metal band.
There are plenty of good riffs on “Truth Unmasked”. I also sense a lot of doom metal inspirations in many of the slower parts of the album. The release consists of two parts; first three individual songs followed by a 5 part conceptual piece entitled “Faith”. Partially based on a true story, “Faith” tells of a woman who as a child was repeatedly raped by her father. Seeking relief in a Christian organisation she finds herself once again exposed to sexual abuse by the religious leader.
Truth Unmasked is a great album for fans of progressive metal and concept albums who at the same time also appreciate thrash inspired guitar riffs. I eagerly await the next album from these very promising Norwegians.
